Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity,

and Transform Your Life as an Educator

Lots of people have asked me about books they see me promoting on social media that are on the IMpress label instead of the Dave Burgess Consulting, Inc. label and I wanted to clear up any confusion plus be sure that you are aware of these incredible titles.

IMpress is a subsidiary of DBC Inc. that is co-owned by Shelley and me and by George and Paige Couros. Our DBC Inc. team does all of the production behind the scenes and we ABSOLUTELY consider these titles and authors a part of our family!!!

I have included a short write up on the books below along with a cover image. These are highly recommended!!!

I also have a time-sensitive announcement about a new Facebook book study (other options, as well) on the smash new hit by George Couros and Katie Novak, Innovate Inside the Box: Empowering Learners Through UDL and the Innovator’s Mindset. It starts on September 15th and is a fantastic chance to dive into the ideas in the book with both of the authors and an entire community of learners. I would recommend you try to get your whole team involved.

Now check out these wonderful titles on our IMpress label!

EMPOWER: What happens when students own their learning? This book explores this critical question and has a powerful message of student empowerment embedded in a layout that is next-level gorgeous. A.J. Juliani and John Spencer (authors of the DBC Inc book, LAUNCH) knocked it out of the park with this book that was the very first in the IMpress line. When people ask about this title, I just tell them to open it up and look inside…a few flips and they are sold! You have to see it! #EmpowerBook

This book is for you if you are wondering . . . What if learners were valued for their diverse talents and not just our traditional model of “smart”? What if I could create new and better experiences for those I serve? What if I could inspire students to learn, to discover their passions, and to share their ideas with the world? Katie Martin’s Learner Centered Innovation has been the catalyst for change in many school system’s who have utilized it for in-depth studies and adopted it’s ideas to inform their work. This is a transformative look at what school can and should be and highlights the work of those who are already making it happen. #LCInnovation

Kara’s insightful guide, Unleash Talent, walks you through a powerful process of self-discovery. She notes that scores, job satisfaction, happiness, and teacher retention improve when every member of the school community is encouraged to use their unique gifts. Helping every member of our learning communities bring out the best in themselves is critical to creating schools that function at the highest levels for all. #UnleashTalent

Our schools ought to be places where students explore, inquire, and unleash creative thinking within a supportive, collaborative environment. Too often, however, they feel more like factories that demand compliance and uniformity—a reality that stifles innovation and leaves students ill-equipped for their futures. The good news is that you can help change that when you reimagine learning by sparking curiosity, inspiring creativity, and promoting student agency. In Take the L.E.A.P.: Ignite a Culture of Innovation, Elizabeth Bostwick shows us a path forward and a game plan to do exactly that. #LEAPeffect

Reclaiming Our Calling: Hold on the Heart, Mind, and Hope of Education. Through a series of interwoven stories, award-winning educator and principal Brad Gustafson reminds us of what we’ve known all along: Children are more than numbers, and we are called to teach and reach them accordingly. Reclaiming Our Calling will empower you to:

*Talk about learning that lasts in tangible terms

*Teach on behalf of the whole learner by tapping into their strengths

*Take steps toward meaningful change regardless of your role

*Understand and lead with the 4 Passions of the Profession and invite others to do the same. #ReclaimingOurCalling

Let’s play math!

Math Recess: Playful Learning in an Age of Disruption by Sunil Singh and Christopher Brownell is a call to arms for all teachers of math at all levels. Math can and should be joyful. We can defeat math anxiety and the self-fulfilling prophecy of failure that many have with regards to mathematics and learn to embrace the wonder and and sheer fascination that results from playing with numbers and math concepts. This book holds a deep and imaginative collection of fun mathematical ideas, puzzles, and problems. More importantly, it will change your whole perspective on how the subject is taught. I wrote more about #MathRecess HERE

Drawn to Teach: An Illustrated Guide to Transforming Your Teaching by Josh Stumpenhorst with artwork by Trevor Guthke is one of the most unique professional development books you will ever see. Each chapter includes powerful and timeless advice and encouragement for educators from Josh but, also, includes a graphic novel twist with fabulous artwork from Trevor. The messages are on point and the delivery system is super creative…an epic mashup of styles that will draw you in and truly makes the book come to life. Another one of those you have to see it to believe it projects. #Drawn2Teach

I wrote recently about Innovate Inside the Box RIGHT HERE. Every educator faces constraints—from budget restrictions to predetermined curriculum to “one-size-fits-all” mandatory assessments. The question is, how can you, as a teacher or administrator, ensure that regulations and limitations don’t impede authentic learning? Innovate Inside The Box is a wonderful combination and expansion of George’s work in The Innovator’s Mindset and the powerful and transformative Universal Design for Learning work of Katie Novak. And…don’t forget to join the book study mentioned at the top of this post!! #InnovateInsideTheBox

There ya go!! The IMpress line currently has 8 titles with more books in development. Shelley and I are proud to partner with George and Paige to bring these messages to the educational world and we can’t wait to unveil our next projects!

As always, thanks for your support and we can’t wait to connect with you and hear what you think!
