The 5 Word GPS Challenge!

Have you set your 5 Word GPS for the next school year? Here is a video I created for Todd Nesloney’s (@techninjatodd) #summerLS voluntary professional development program. (By the way….not too late to join! Here is the link: http://www.toddnesloney.com/#!class-blog/c1ld3 )

This is a challenge I often use as a part of my Teaching Outside the Box breakout session. It is based on an end of year student assignment from Michael Matera (@MrMatera), a fantastic teacher and gamification expert in Wisconsin. You can find Michael on Twitter or at his website here:

http://www.mrmatera.com

Please watch the video and then take the Teach Like a PIRATE 5 Word GPS Challenge! I can’t wait to see where you’ll be driving your class or school next year!

Feel free to post your 5 words in the comments here or on Twitter. You can use #tlap, #summerLS, and @burgessdave if you use Twitter.

  7. Dave,

On the the first day of my summer vacation…you continue to inspire me set my GPS coordinates & to submit these 5 words:

    safe
    authentic
    challenging
    responsive
    interactive

  8. Dave : Love the idea of the GPS. As a retired educator, one of my joys is running into my former students and having them share the lessons they remember the most and the wonderful times we shared growing together. When teachers have such enthusiasm the impact we can have on our students can be life changing. Continued “safe seas” ,Pirate !! Barbara

  9. 5 word GPS:
    Encouraging
    Barrier-breaking
    Fearless
    Experimental
    Not-State-Driven!!
As a principal I need to know where we all are and where we are headed and get out front and run interference!

  10. Also a principal, so these 5 words are for the staff in my building:
    Reflective
    Purposeful
    Responsive
    Caring
    Inspiring
We are going to be starting a book study this August of Teach Like A Pirate and I am going to prime them by sharing this challenge with them! Arrrgh!

  11. I jotted these down but am going to let them sit before I decide these are the five.

I had my students complete a survey at the end of the year. My good, bad and ugly, and I tried to think where they suggested improvement and what they liked.

I also don’t see these a kid words. I want to think about that…but I am commenting b/c even if it is a rough draft if makes me commit to this. Which I like very much. Thanks as always Dave!

*organized (I like Janice’s word purposeful above. I may pirate.)
    *inspiring
    *kind
    *engaging
    *challenging

  12. Love it, Dave. Here’s my 2 bits:

FYI: We’re close to releasing v2.0 of Game On, our free, student-produced WordPress plugin. (It enables us to gamify our curriculum.) More info at http://edex.adobe.com/group/game-on/discussion/8610bf/

Kids were in the classroom three days last week writing code all day—voluntarily—on their summer vacation. A real-life treasure chest. 🙂
